In short

Who we are

My Basket Score is made by MDS Ministries in the United Kingdom. For anything about this policy or your data, email hello@mybasketscore.com.

What stays in your browser

These are kept in Chrome's own extension storage on your computer. If you use Chrome sync, Chrome copies the settings to your other computers through your Google account; we never see them.

Uninstalling the extension deletes all of this from your computer.

What is sent to our server, and why

Our server runs on Cloudflare, with its database in Western Europe. Every request is about products or about how well the extension is working; none carries an account, a name or anything we could use to tell who you are.

WhatWhenWhy
A product's shop product code, product number, barcode, name and the address of its product page on the shop's site When a product you're looking at (on a search, product or trolley page) isn't already known to your browser To get its nutrition label so it can be scored. This means our server sees which products appear on pages you view, but not who is viewing them. Prices, quantities and search terms are never sent.
A product's label: name, ingredients, nutrition table, allergens, claims (such as "suitable for vegans"), packaging and category When you open a product page at one of the shops and the label can be read So the next shopper who sees that product gets its real label. This is product information printed on the pack and shown publicly by the shop.
Anonymous counts: the shop, the type of page, the version of our reading rules, how many times each part of a page was read or not, a short code describing the layout of a product tile (no text from the page), how many products on a search page had a score, and, only when something couldn't be read, the address of one such page without any search terms Every 15 minutes, unless you turn this off in settings ("Help keep it working") To notice quickly when a shop changes its website and the extension stops working. Turning it off stops sending straight away and deletes unsent counts.
A daily "in use" signal: the shop, the extension's version, and whether it's the first shop used that day. No ID of any kind At most once a day for each shop you use, unless you turn off "Help keep it working" So we can count how many people use the extension each day. The signals are only added up: we can't tell whose they are or link one day's signal to another's.
A problem report: the shop, the type of page, the page's address without search terms, the counts for that page, which parts could be read, the extension's version, and anything you type in the note Only when you press "Report a problem" and send it So we can look into it. Reports are emailed to us and deleted from our server after 90 days. Please don't put personal details in the note.
Nothing (a plain download) About once an hour To get updated "reading rules" for each shop's pages, so the extension keeps working when a site changes. These are data, not code.

Testers

A small group of volunteers ("testers") help us add products faster. If you are one, we keep your email address and the name you gave us so you can sign in at mybasketscore.com/testers, and we count how many products your browser added (using the tester code you typed into the extension's settings). When we ask you to save a page that stopped working, the file you upload is cleaned in your browser first (scripts and images removed) and kept for 14 days; please save it while signed out of the shop. We use all this only to run the testing programme and to say thank you. Ask us to remove you at any time and we delete your email address, name and totals. Shoppers who aren't testers never have a tester code, and nothing they send is linked to them.

Your internet address

Like any website, our server receives the internet (IP) address your requests come from. We use it only for a minute or an hour, in memory, to stop anyone sending too many requests, and we don't store it. Cloudflare, which runs our server, keeps short technical logs of requests (such as the time and the address requested) for a few days; we use them only to fix problems.

Other services involved

We don't use advertising, analytics or tracking services, and we don't sell, rent or share data with anyone else. Data is used only to provide the extension's features, never for advertising, credit or lending decisions, or anything unrelated to scoring your shopping.

How long we keep things

Your choices and rights

We hold no information that identifies you, so in most cases there is nothing about you for us to show or delete. If you sent a problem report and want it deleted early, email us with roughly when you sent it. Under UK data protection law you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Children

My Basket Score is for adults doing their grocery shopping and isn't aimed at children under 13.

Changes

If we change what is collected, we'll update this page and its date before the change reaches the extension.
